Textile Cartographies Residency in South Thyrol, 5-12 April 2025
Participants from Jaen2- Spain;Bolzano. taly; India, Haifa- Israel; Guadalajara- Mexico and APECV- Portugal and new members from Kirgistan and Sicilia during the residency were able to reflect and exchange ideas around the main concepts of the project—particularly the notions of "Gift," "Community Art Education," and "Community Arts." They also created squares for the installation ‘Textile Cartographies’ at Worldview exhibition, during 2025 Gwangju Design Biennale and the next exhibition of Textile Cartographies in Brazil ( Alter do Chão, September 2025). The group decided to proposal the continuation of the research project for one more year ( until 30 December 2026).

In February 25 , Pawan Sudhir organized a seminar in Bilaspur, Delhi, Panckula and Jaipur.
The program included, display of squares received from different countries and that of Indian participants. Squares of Indian Artisans from the Tribal community. Research paper presentations by the participants and textile art experts on subject and display of the related artifacts by master craftsmen and women from the Chhattisgarh Tribes. Interactions with Local artisans. Cultural performances and Field trip to the places of historical importance and to the Centres of Arts and Crafts from Tribes of India. |

The walking Seminar in Cyprus, 22-29 October
Maria Vassiliadou organised a very intensive programme for the seminar. Participants from the Portuguese group APECV: Teresa, Celia, Angela and family; Spain- Jaen 2 group: Isabel; Estrella, Jesus, Lorena and Marta; and Brazil- S. Paulo group: Flavia and Viviane and a group of students from Romenia: 5 wonderful twenty years old girls (Amelia, Maria; Gabriella; Andrea and Irina) participated in the seminar- an intergenerational group! The starting workshop was a wonderful ice breaking with a well known choreographer who uses to work with movement and threats.
We visited and discovered the rich cultural past of Nicosia and Cyprus, leaned about the divided country and historical facts. Astonished by archaeological treasury in the museums, the golden icons in the middle age monastery of Saint John Lampadistis. We were received in the houses of the women in Kalopanayiotis, in Troodos mountains. In the village of Fyti, near Paphos. We discover the traditional patterns of Cypriot textiles in the looms of the weavers.
During the 5 days we learn aspects of Cypriot culture and textile heritage, We created squares in the street; in the houses of our guests in Fyti and Kalopanayiotis; during the workshops; during the walks in Troodos mountains and in the restaurants near the sea. During our long conversations and embroider together, these are some of the reflections:
- Textile art making allows the creation of connection spaces; being together, conversation, sense of belonging
- Textile art making allows the creation of caring spaces; belonging to a group, listen and to be listened
- cartographies in-between local actions and global visibility of stories
- TC is not an artistic project: we can do exhibitions in galleries, festivals, museums, but the purpose of the project is not this type of commercial/elitist art
- TC actions such as in workshops and exhibitions allow pluriverse stories
- Spaces for making textile can be anywhere with everyone
- TC will run as a research project until 2025, during the next months we will figure out a way to maintain TC sustainably after the end project as a movement (e.g. postal art)

The presentation was a performance, We brought aprons, needles, string and strips ofwhite fabric for the setting. The performance was based on the legend of Moirai, weavers of lifetime, personifications of fate in Greek mythology.
Angela adapted Anita and Elly's video in this version and we projected it in the first part of the performance, after we invited everyone to enter a dance circle where we cut squares to give to participants, we explained the project and everyone started to embroider a story, we brought the squares to the exhibition in Cyprus.
Each coordinator (Steve- Missouri, EUA; Maria Paz- Jaen 1, Spain; Cristina Trigo- Galiza-Spain; Cristina Arriaga- Basque Country; Petra- Italy; Angela&Celia&Teresa- Portugal; Flavia & Viviane- S. Paulo, Brazil) told how they developed the project in their groups. The people who attended the performance were very curious about the project and appreciated our working method, grounded on crafts, material and embodiment. From coordinators' descriptions, we were surprised by the level of involvement of people during the exhibitions in Santiago de Compostela; Bilbao; Bolzano and S. Paulo. The exhibitions are also places for receiving stories, not only for showing.

Action in Beypore, Kerala, India, February 2024

Whatever the final story may appear with the different colors and fabrics, it has the different emotions, the flavors, the gazes and this generosity that can be achieved only through the gift of a square. During this action, in Kerala, the process evolved smoothly, in the first 2 days of the week we set up the project introduction using a table in Tasara open air exhibition, people came, artists from Tasara retreat and visitors of the exhibition, some of them took squares and gave it to us during the next 3 weeks, we also did same squares using indigo dye, some people enjoyed using the indigo squares to start their stories, some other people took some indigo squares as a souvenir. During the waiting time, we told other people about the project, one by one. In the last day we assembled the squares received in a panel . There were amazing squares like the tapestry made by Nemichand, weaver from India, stories by Pawan Sudir, new TC local coordinator in India, embroideries by Cristian and Claudia, from Colombia, the beautiful appliqué by Olga from Iceland, the incredible squares from Maria and Svetlana from Russia, Shawsuland and Aung Zaw from Myanmar: Sheeja; Aastha and Sneekula from India; Susanne from USA; Shirley from Wales; Zaia from Mongolia; Ale Sequeira and Graciella Fournier from Costa Rica and Graciella Miller from Uruguay. In this action we understood the power of collecting stories, of a collective image with many layers of participation and the role of the gift as a commitment to the collective stories.

Action: Mantra for Peace, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; 16/17 November 2022 |

On the 16th and 17th of November we brought the action Mantra for Peace to Santiago de Compostela. On the 16th, with the exhibition of one of the Mantras of Peace performed during the Ephemeral Gardens ( Jardins Efémeros) with groups from the Viseu region during the Liter 21 Congress of Literature and Artistic Education, at the University of Santiago Campus Sul. On the 18th, with an exhibition of the mantra at the Museum of Pilgrimage and Santiago ( Museo das Peregrinacións e de Santiago.). We also did a street action where we embroidered more squares for Peace with people passing in front of the museum. We had the collaboration of the Liter21 Group (USC) and the C3 collective.

Walking Seminar, Pico , Azores islands, 2022Pico
14-17 July 2022 : Walking Seminar at Faial, Azores archipelago , Portugal The second walking seminar took place in the Azores archipelago, under the dragon trees in the island of Pico, The organizer was the local environmentalist Bela Dutra , who also curated the exhibition at the Handcraft Center of Capelo in the island of Faial, where we had the opportunity to engage with local textile crafters and discovered the beauty embroider with straw. Project Participants were from Namibia ( Christiana and Claudia), Portugal ( Angela & Margarida baby, Celia, Teresa; Mila, Augusta, Raquel); Mexico ( Patricia) and observers from Italy (Petra) and Germany (Christiane). Later Petra initiated the group in South Tyrol. This seminar was prepared using the process of ‘Derive’ as experimented by international situationists mouvement, inviting participants to make a drift staring in the harbor. Angela prepared a beautiful notebook for the drift , it was given to everyone as a welcome gift and instrument for collecting notes. We walked around, in silence and sometimes between laughs, observing the landscape, the exotic volcanic stones, the small vignards, the potent presence of the blue and the magnifique sound of the Atlantic ocean. After a couple of hours the group decided to sat under the umbrella of dragon trees to talk about the drift and the project. Christiane invited the group for a visual mapping activity and Bela Dutra told us the stories of the flora in the island. In the end of the day the group left to take the last ferry to Faial. |
